Spinning a New Article – Is it Worth it?

We’re often told – Make one piece of content do the work of many. Great idea. Convert your 1000 word article (Google loves ’em longer these days) into a video, pick some highlights and make it into a presentation, turn it into a PDF or an ebook and then distribute the heck out of all these new pieces of information.

There’s just one problem and it’s a perennial Google favourite…

DUPLICATE CONTENT

In many ways it’s not the problem it once was. Google understands curation – where a lot of content is drawn from various sources to make a collection. Yahoo News does plenty of it, yet they don’t seem to be penalised, so why is duplicate content still a problem?

It boils down to users. When they start seeing things they’ve seen before, they start to switch off and if your content is everywhere they may start to run into duplicates even if they’re all yours. They start to lose trust and trust is a major factor when it comes to getting people to buy stuff from you.

Article directories and document repositories aren’t dumb either. They will soon see when you start putting the same content in different formats all over the place and if they’re not happy, your submissions might not be accepted so readily.

So what can you do about it? Surely re-writing an article 3 or 4 times isn’t a major hassle?

Three or 4 times may not be, but what about 30 or 40, maybe even 100 times? Sure, putting out 100 articles all around the same topic will surely get the attention you crave, but how to make them different enough so that people and sites don’t notice.

This is when I’m going to talk to you about article spinning.

Don’t run away screaming. Article spinning isn’t the dire thing it used to be.

In the good old days (more than 5 years ago. We’re talking olden days in Internet time), article spinner software used to be solely word based. They’d replace one word at a time with a synonym – a word that meant the same thing or something related like using a named person instead of ‘he’.

The trouble is with word replacement like this is that you could end with sentences that didn’t make any sense or looked like that were translated from English to English via Chinese by an Indian subsistence-level worker armed only with an English-Chinese dictionary and no idea of how to speak either language. It gets even worse when you throw in where to use ‘a’ and ‘an’, he being replaced by ‘John’ in one phrase and ‘Fred’ in another followed by a ‘she’ further on.

The whole article would look a mess and would need more time in editing  than would have taken to rewrite it. Every article would be unique though. Not necessarily intelligible, but definitely unique.

So article spinning software got a bit more bolted on that sorted the grammar out a bit better. It still wasn’t perfect and you could still end up with some dumb looking phrases that were good grammar, but the best stuff was still mostly done by hand. And it was still mostly word or at best, short phrase replacement.

In the last couple of years, article spinning has become a good business to be in. You can take an article and using the right spinner,  turn out 50 to 100 articles that are all at least 30% different to each other (25% difference is the minimum an article needs to be considered original) when using Copyscape, the standard for copy checking.

Word and phrase swapping is the last level of good spinning, not the first. If a paragraph can be re-written to mean exactly the same as the original, then you can be off to a better start. Then whole sentence level re-writing, so that any sentence could be replaced with it’s companion in another paragraph. Down to phrases that get the same treatment and finally words.

When things are done that way, it is very easy to end up with as many articles as you need with less chance of gobbledegook grammar.

However, it’s a lot of work to do it manually and it’s very easy to get lost in a nest of square brackets, pipe symbols and the required punctuation. I know because I did it once or twice.

Five hundred word articles with 5 variations of each paragraph (so I’ve now written 2500 words), then 5 variations of significant phrases (not every phrase is always worth re-writing) before finally getting down to 2-3 word-phrase replacements. It can work out to more than 10,000 words – the length of a decent short story.

Spin-ready, that document will have various levels of nested brackets and it can all go to pot if you miss a closing bracket somewhere, so although it’s do-able, it’s not easy.

How to get an affiliate advantage over others trying to offer the same product.

Affiliate marketing is a competitive game. This is something not often stressed by the experts and gurus although it seems patently obvious to the newbies.

A lot of affiliates are trying to sell the same products, very often to the same people (if you’ve grown your email list via solo ads, the same people end up on a lot of lists), so how can one affiliate rise above the rest and make himself heard above the noise being made by all the other ‘me too’ people?

There are all sorts of tricks to try to be different to the rest.

There’s the intrigue method – I’m not actually going to tell you which product I’m promoting, but I’ll try to drop some inside knowledge and get you to ask for more. Very often used on Facebook (“type info to discover more”).

How about the tell you almost everything method – I’ll tell you more about the product than the sales page does, almost to the point where you don’t have to buy it, but I’ll leave out the vital bits. A usual newbie trick that often upsets the vendors.

The you already trust me method – I’ve sold you some stuff before and you haven’t told me you didn’t like it, so you must like it, therefore you’ll buy from me again. Takes a bit of time and the trust isn’t always there.

These methods all work a bit, but there is one method that is proven to work very well, doesn’t depend on trust since it screams it out already, but can be abused to the point of near terminal stupidity.

And that is…

Something that is used quite a lot, especially by the bigger-name marketers who (mostly) do it properly to really gain the affiliate advantage over the newer guys.

Shall I tell you now?

It’s actually quite a simple method, at least when stated up-front. There are some though who do it quite badly and there are a few who over-do it for all the wrong reasons.

Bonuses.

Yup. The bonus method. Provide 1 to 6 bonuses that enhance the product for sale or fill in a gap in the training or just add an additional set of thoughts into the main event.

A well thought-out bonus will do any or all of the above.

A bad bonus could be any old crap that was lying to hand when the affiliate link was granted. An extreme example would be you’ve just bought a Facebook marketing method and the bonus offered is an ebook on fishing.

No congruency at all.

Affiliate Advantage A course on Instagram would have been better. A short course on tips for Facebook ads or using groups would be best, especially if these methods were not mentioned in the main product.

Another extreme example (but a real-life one though) is offering too much. One affiliate offered (a claimed) $250,000 worth of products as a bonus for a $7 front-end offer. If you offer too much in quantity the poor buyer just gets swamped and will probably fail to do anything with any of it. Main offer included.

The right amount seems to be around 3-5 bonus items that are at least mostly congruent with the front-end product. Many marketers are now adding their own self-created bonuses. A 15-30 minute video commentary of them using the product and/or showing their results. Case studies like this are a very good bonus as they show the product already working for someone else.

Fifteen years ago email marketing and it was pretty simple to grow your email list fast. Most likely because email was a rarity still to everyone, so they readily offered their email address to get a piece of badly written info and an offer of weekly updates.

That’s not the way things work these days. A big problem is, there are still tutorials still in use that show list-building tips from that are outdated now. Even badly researched new manuals.that triumph this recycled stuff, simply because the researcher hasn’t built a list in the last decade.

This is probably why list building newcomers are producing a large quantity of problems for themselves. And one of the biggest mistakes they’re making is to offer some rehashed ancient PLR product in exchange for a subscriber.

The name ”value offering” should be your first idea that you can’t offer a heap of garbage. This isn’t the time to dig out some RR offering that hasn’t been of any real use ever. Forget about using that resell rights report that everyone has seen. And don’t even think about bribing with something shoddy just because you’re giving it away for free.

Make note , if you do any of these things then you’ll be the one checking out tiny double-digit subscriber numbers while dreaming about multi-thousand member lists.

So, let me tell you the whole truth about creating a quality offering that really attracts laser targeted opt-ins and gets them wanting to join your subscribers list (and buy from you). Take a gander at these few hints….

Tip 1: Give Email Prospects What They Really Want

Don’t assume what your niche wants. Instead, roll up your sleeves and do some discovery for yourself.
The best way to do this is to go to marketplaces like Amazon.com and Clickbank.com, check out what’s a big seller in your marketplace, and then create something similar to offer to your subscribers. Probably,if your market is already offering money to grab a specific type of book – such as a exercise for arm muscles training or a video creation guide, for example — then they’ll jump on it when you offer it as an optin gift.

Tip 2: Create Something Opt-Ins Will Refer To Frequently

The more often a user uses your lead magnet product, the more often they’ll see your face, links and calls to action. This is the value of why you’ll want to provide a resource or tool that they’ll use frequently. Examples include:
• Equipment lists.
• A noddy guide.
• An app or another piece of software.
So maybe you had an ebook in mind. No problem. Just be sure this PDF or report has included something people will want to refer to often. For example, if it’s a weight loss report, then you might include meal plans and recipes.

Tip 3: Make Sure It Is Something They Would Have Paid For

The 1st idea was to make your freebie desirable. Now, this last tip is to be sure your lead magnet has value too. Make the prospect think that you should be able to readily charge money for — $17, $27, $97 or more.
You can see that a lot of list builders make the mistakeof using a low value product as an opt-in gift. They think that since they’re offering a freebie, then the ebook itself shouldn’t be worth much.
This is where you should be doing just the opposite. Make the product valuable and delight your opt-ins. Demonstrate to them that your giveaways that are even better than what others are selling. This not only boosts your visitor to subscriber ratio, it will boost your backend conversion rate too as subscribers are ready to buy what you’re selling.

Last Word…

A lead magnet needs to live up to your brand so that it attracts opt-ins. But your lead magnet also needs to come together for you to convert these prospects to reach into their wallets. If you use the tips above, you’ll be well on your way to creating free products that builds massive lists.

What is Affiliate Marketing? That much is quite easy. It’s when you sell someone else’s product on their behalf and they pay you for doing so. It’s not restricted to the online marketing sphere but the internet age has certainly made it more popular and a very easy way to make money online. If you have an interest in a topic and you’re sure others have too, then chances are there are products that can be sold via an affiliate system.

For example, a vital part of online marketing (for the most part) is having a website and to start a website you need a domain name – the bit that people type in to find your website, and some hosting – where your website is built. Companies that sell website hosting often use affiliates to bring more customers to them. It’s a win for these companies because they can concentrate on doing what they do and they let other people bring customers to them because this is often done through a layer of trust.

For instance: Namecheap sell domain names. You want a domain name and because you know me and you know that I do some online marketing and you trust my judgement and value my opinions. You say to me, “Hey Steven. Where is a good place to get a domain name?” I tell you “Namecheap. Here’s their link – http://sl-m.co/nmcp“. I also tell you (because the laws in several countries tell me that I have to tell you and because I’m honest). “This is an affiliate link. If you buy something from Namecheap using this link, I will get some commission. Don’t worry though, you won’t be charged more for using it.”

Being a good friend (and good at affiliate marketing), the next thing I will ask you is if you have any hosting to go with your domain name.

If you tell me no, then I will follow up by offering you a hosting company I know of  that I think would be suited to your needs. If I know you are starting out but determined to make a lot of effort I would suggest someone like Bluehosthttp://sl-m.co/bluehost (again via an affiliate link – the disclosures above still apply).

If I suspected that this was just a passing fancy for you, I might suggest a cheaper hosting solution like Dorset Hosting http://sl-m.co/dorsethosting as I have used and trust them myself. (Not as fast as Bluehost, not 24hr but still good customer support and just easy to work with to set up websites).

Now in each of the above cases I would get a commission if my links were used to get to the sites.

In the first instance I would get a percentage of the sale from Namecheap, the more the customer bought, the more I’d get. In the case of Bluehost, I would get a one-off payment no matter how much was purchased at the time. In the final case, Dorset Hosting, I would get an amount every renewal date depending on the package purchased.

So all three companies pay me for sending someone to their site who buys, but the conditions are different in each case.

All 3 are valid methods of getting affiliates to promote their products, but which pays more in the long-run?

How Much Will I Get?

In the case of Namecheap, the commission varies between 20% to 35% depending on the product. For a single .com domain name (currently $7.95) that would be $1.58 – not a great deal of money, but it’s not a high-ticket item either.

 If I send a buyer to Bluehost, I would get a one-off payment of $65. Quite a decent payout considering that a monthly cost of a hosting package is around $3.95, but Bluehost think for the long-term. They know a customer could stay for years and those few dollars each month soon add up and easily cover the cost of an affiliate payment for them.

Devon Hosting’s base hosting package is $10 a year, from which I’d get $1 so I wouldn’t get rich that way either.

You can see why affiliate marketers push Bluehost’s package the hardest. There’s a good up-front payment and somebody else deals with all the support problems (and hosting can have many of those).

Are There Better Commission Rates?

Of course there are. Commission rates of between 50% up to 100% are quite common online where there are few overheads and no real limits on digital products. Even on multi-thousand dollar products, 30% up to 50% can be quite easy to find – but why isn’t everybody offering them?

Mostly it’s down to self-confidence. Some people just don’t feel comfortable asking potential customers to part with hundreds of dollars, but in order to make a living wage online, you have to get over that issue and be prepared to push these big-ticket items. A car salesman has no qualms about getting you to part with $20k for a modest vehicle that loses a third of its value the moment it’s driven out of the showroom. Good digital training has the potential to earn the buyer back his money in short-order if he puts in the necessary work, so it’s not something you need to be shy about.

You may have to gain an amount of trust though from the vendors who sell the big-ticket products which means offering low and mid-ticket items first to build up your reputation and confidence.

Where Can I Find Affiliate Products to Sell?

One of the most famous affiliate netorks (places where products are offered for affiliates to sell) is Clickbank. A big advantage of Clickbank is that most of the products do not need permission from the vendor if you wish to offer it. You sign up, create your affiliate name and that becomes part of your affiliate link. The vendor sets the commission rate (normally 50-75%) and all you have to do is offer the product to interested people and collect the commissions.

Clickbank’s biggest ‘disadvantage’ is the wait period between the sale and the commission payment. It can be up to 6 weeks as it’s 30 days after the end of the next 2-week period in which the sale was made. There are a few other conditions that have to be met by the new affiliate too.

Clickbank has products in a huge range of niches and something can be found in almost every topic.

If you are more into the ‘make money online’ niches then two good places to look at are are JVZoo and WarriorPlus. The commissions run up to 100% although you must request approval from the vendor before offering a product. Payouts can be either 30 days, 15 days or instant – if you have built up the right amount of sales and trust – and not too many returns!

What Next?

The obvious thing to do is to find products in a niche you are interested in and write reviews about them on your blog (can be a free blog like WordPress, Blogger or Weebly) and include your affiliate links at key points in the review. Tell everyone who might be interested about your review, then let the readers decide if they want to buy.

The more honest you are, the more readers you’ll get, so don’t be afraid to say what you really feel about a product.

Don’t want to do either of these -Don’t bother with affiliate marketing. You need to be willing to put some effort in. It’s not push-button and nothing will happen for you if you don’t do anything.

Last Few Tips

Find some way to shorten those lengthy affiliate links you can get. You probably noticed that all mine are shortened with my own custom domain (sl-m.co). You don’t have to use a custom domain, bit.ly or tinyurl.com will do nicely. Anything to hide your personal link and stop people replacing your affiliate ID with their own.

Don’t bother people who aren’t interested. They won’t buy and you just look bad.

Look out for related sales. If you find something closely related and extra helpful to people who have bought one type of product, you stand a high chance of getting them interested in the related product.

Be real and be honest. People prefer honesty over total enthusiasm.

If it isn’t fun, go and do something else.

When does a post become an article, becomes an ebook, becomes a course?

When does a post become an article, becomes an ebook, becomes a course?

We’re probably all used to writing short little posts on our Facebook walls and every now and again, writing something a bit longer that tends to gain some interest.

At what point should a social media post be better shown as an article – either on a blog or an article marketing site? If that article gets too big, would it be better off as an ebook and at what point is it worth saying “I could sell this as a tutorial”, knowing it would be a good seller?

At the social post level, you have to consider how the comment will be read. Most people are just on social media for quick bursts of entertainment, so a couple of hundred words would be more than enough. Especially if they’re reading it on a phone or small tablet.

Beyond a certain point, Facebook will automatically cut a post off with a ‘Read More’ message and if the message beyond the ‘read more’ is too long, it will actually open it in a new tab. Something to consider if you’re off on a long rant or start to have a lot to say.

This is the ideal point to actually put the article on your blog if you have one. By all means put the first couple of paragraphs as a social media post – enough to get to the ‘read more’ point, then link to your blog article.

Post To Blog

This encourages more people to be aware of the existence of your blog (a good thing) and while they are there, they might see other articles they like and stay longer (another good thing) and see some of the ads that are on your pages too (another good thing).

What if you don’t have a blog?

Time to make your own fan page on Facebook and put your full article there.  Still show the teaser on your wall – More people will see it there, but link to your fan page and encourage visitors to like the page.

The advantages here are – Facebook will love you for NOT sending people off their site. You can run FB ads to your snippet or your full article for even more readers and more awareness of YOU and make the big F even happier as you’re giving them money AND keeping people on their site.

People are also less hesitant to follow the link because they are not leaving FB.

However, if part of your article is to get people to follow an affiliate link or go to an optin form, you are going to get interested people who are more likely to take your action as they have made some small commitments already (followed the teaser link AND read the full article).

Article to Ebook

Don’t want to run a fan page? Put your article up on an article marketing site like EzineArticles. It must, of course, conform to their standards – over 400 words, not include blatant marketing links and a few other conditions, but the sort of article that gets interest would need to be along those lines anyway.

Once you start exceeding a page (around 500 words at 12 point Calibri font), then you’re getting into big article territory and it could be time to convert your article into a PDF (via MS Word, Open Office or a PDF Print driver), after adding some graphics, images or separating that long paragraph into bullet points.

You’re now into optin giveaway territory.

Giveaways may be up to 10 to 12 pages although much of that could be using a cover, a larger font (for easier reading) so it doesn’t mean 5000 words. An article or ebook of 2500-3000 words is a comfortable amount to read in a single sitting for most people. This doesn’t include your intro, ads, offers or resources list. Just the actionable content.

Giveaways that exceed this sort of length rarely get read or actioned as people will just grab them because they’re free then let the file gather digital dust on the hard drive. If you have some good info that needs action from them, charge them for it. But these days unless you are a well-known name, you need to add more value to make it more saleable. Fortunately, this isn’t too difficult.

What Else Can Be Done?

You can pull the high points from the actions and you have a checklist. Go to a site like MindMeister and jot down your trains of thought in the various directions – you’ve now got a mind-map. A few chapter headings onto a PowerPoint presentation then turned into a video with either a voice-over reading the words from your ebook or just the words on successive pages and you have the complete package ready for eager buyers.

You still use the opening paragraph or two on social sites to tease people into looking at your sales page but the better thought for you is that you’ve tricked yourself into creating a product – all from the starting point of a short post on Facebook.

One other starting point is PLR or Private Label Rights – but make sure any PLR articles you use are just starting points. Never use PLR ‘as-is’.

Even better is to use several pieces of PLR and draw inspiration and paragraphs or chapters from each of them, re-writing as required to make them fit together.

Another place to draw inspiration is other people’s writing. As with PLR you cannot use the article as it stands unless you credit the original author (name in full and the link where you got the article from).

An article though can give you an idea (ideas are not copyrighted) that you can expand on in a different direction. It might be on the same topic as the original but it won’t be the same article.

 

Getting from a short post to a full ebook to a paid course are not difficult steps and once you get into the rhythm of writing it will start to flow and you will almost always end up with a longer piece than you intended.

How To Build Your Own Sales Funnel

Everyone tells you – create a product and make a sales funnel. It’s all very easy to say, but unless you have the knowledge, it’s not so easy to do.Here’s my take on How To Build Your Own Sales Funnel.

Sure, there are some very nice online services that can help you put together a sales funnel from front-end freebie to the final high-ticket offer, but some of them are gosh-darned expensive and still require an amount of expertise to use properly.How To Build Your Own Sales Funnel

And what if you’re starting from a PLR (Private Label Rights) package? You can sit down with the doc version and make enough changes so that it hardly resembles the original but what if you want to take it beyond the single upsell that is normally provided?

‘Start with the end in mind’ is one of the pieces of advice normally dished out at this stage and I have found that taking it literally is a good way to design and build your sales funnel.

 

Start at the end

Let’s start with a 3 part funnel – a free gift, the first offer and a final upsell. You don’t need to stop at 3 offers, but after this stage, it’s only repetition. I’m also going to assume that you’re self-hosting the pages and not using an affiliate network like JVZoo or WarriorPlus. (You can use these services even if you’re not going to offer the products out to affiliates, but bear in mind they will take a cut of your sales too).

If you’re not going through a pre-built system or a service, then I usually find it is easiest to start with the final download page that you will control (nothing stopping you having a related affiliate offer on this page though. It is the point though at which the buyer leaves your pages and goes onto someone else’s). When you have the final page done, you can then step back to the sales page for that item, knowing you already have the links that will take you onwards – handy for the payment button if nothing else.

You then go onwards to prepare the download page for the middle item in the funnel and it’s made easier because you have the upsell link to the final item already there for constructing and testing. Then the sales page for the middle item, the download page for the freebie and then the squeeze page.

By constructing the funnel backwards like this, you will have more of the links ready and there will be fewer visits to the payment processor’s sales button tools page as well as each of the other pages.

To my mind, this is the easy way on how to build your own sales funnel and to keep track of where you are in the design and construction process.

As for exactly what to add, you do have to make sure that there is enough value at each stage to justify the user reaching into their wallet once again. What you don’t want is them reaching for the refund link or payment dispute system. Do them wrong once and they will remember you for a long while.

The Drive by Kam Fatz – Review of The Drive

I’ve known Kam Fatz for a while and I’ve always liked what he’s put out. He’s not all slick and polish, he’ll be the first to admit that, but what he does bring you is high value information and The Drive is no different.

Kam Fatz (Jennings) made his money online running a membership site and has always made a big thing of encouraging others to do the same. It’s a great plan, gets people in for a longer haul and gives you more opportunities to offer real value to the people who have found you.

It’s very much the ‘Know, Like & Trust’ that I and many others go on about so much. A membership site can increase that a lot and very quickly too. If you have good content, people will see it frequently and know that you are someone who can help them go even further.

The DriveKam’s latest offering to the world is called ‘The Drive’, purely because much of it is Kam talking to his camera while he drives around. It makes things very relaxed for both the presenter and the viewer and even if Kam loses his way round what he’s talking about sometimes, it’s no less entertaining for it. And bear in mind that products are as much about entertainment as information.

When were you last entertained by a course you bought?

Now just because Kam’s delivery is informal doesn’t mean the content is the same. The advice given is spot on and there are assurances that delivering content does not have to be as complicated as it appears. Kam has a very Keep It Simple approach in The Drive and his suggestions for running a membership program could include people with almost no budget at all. At least in the beginning. Any decent membership site will start to bring you regular income and can then easily almost promote itself.

So what do you get for your money in The Drive? Three well presented videos – 2 from the drive around and one in his office. Two PDFs – one a write upof the drive and the other, a printout of the mindmap that Kam takes you through and three bonuses of Kam’s older membership site offerings on PDF – The whole system together being something that should encourage you to strike out and build your own membership system in any niche.

 

What’s missing? Not a lot really. The two tonnes of filler and BS that so many others feel necessary to burden their buyers with. Definitely none of that in The Drive.

Bonuses

Step by step details on the ‘How’ are not really there, but Kam does tell you short cuts that he has used successfully and because he’s not technical, he does skimp on the technical details. That is far less of a problem than you might think as there’s plenty of help on YouTube and elsewhere to do anything you’re not sure of. And if you think that’s mean of him, you might consider whether you actually have the drive of your own to set up and run a membership program.

Do I like The Drive? I think you can tell I do. There’s not any life-changing revelations in it, but there is a lot of solid information and a simpler way of looking at things when you’re considering a membership scheme.
